Simplifying Licensing and Governance information for the meat, seafood, poultry and and pet food industries

ProjectPrimeSafe website redesign and development

Overview

PrimeSafe is the statutory authority responsible for regulating the safety of meat, poultry, seafood, and pet food industries in Victoria, Australia. Established under the Meat Industry Act 1993, PrimeSafe ensures that these industries comply with strict food safety standards to protect public health and consumer interests. The organization licenses businesses, conducts audits, and enforces compliance with food safety regulations. Additionally, PrimeSafe plays a crucial role in managing and preventing foodborne illnesses by setting standards for processing, handling, and distribution within the industry. Through education, monitoring, and enforcement, PrimeSafe helps maintain the integrity and safety of the food supply chain across Victoria.

PrimeSafe needed a comprehensive website redesign to improve the accessibility and usability of its online content. The goal was to streamline the navigation and structure of the website to help licensees easily find and access relevant guidance, such as factsheets, guidelines, and “PrimeNotes.” The redesign aimed to reduce the time licensees spend locating necessary information and decrease the volume of inquiries directed to PrimeSafe staff, thus encouraging more self-service among licensees.

Challenge

Outdated Website Structure: The website’s original structure, unchanged since the mid-2000s, was no longer adequate for the growing volume and complexity of PrimeSafe’s content.

Fragmented Content: Key information was dispersed across numerous pages, creating “islands of information” that were difficult to navigate due to the lack of a comprehensive navigation system like a mega menu or sidebar.

Dense Written Content: Extensive and technical content was challenging to digest, potentially obscuring important information. This required a reorganization with visual aids to improve clarity and accessibility.

Solution

To address the challenges identified in the PrimeSafe website, the following solutions were developed:

  1. Detailed Solution Design: A comprehensive design plan was created to restructure the website, enhancing the navigation and organisation of content to ensure a more intuitive user experience.
  2. Annotated Wireframes / UX: Detailed wireframes with annotations were developed to map out the new user experience, focusing on improving the flow and accessibility of information. These wireframes guided the redesign process, ensuring that user needs were central to the development.
  3. Interface Design: A new, user-friendly interface was designed, emphasising clarity and ease of use. Visual elements such as icons, diagrams, and other cues were incorporated to make dense content more accessible and engaging.
  4. WordPress Implementation Using Gutenberg Blocks: The website was built using WordPress with Gutenberg blocks, enabling PrimeSafe to easily manage and update content. This solution facilitated ongoing content management and ensured that the website could evolve alongside PrimeSafe’s needs.
