Some Drupal questions we get asked
What is Drupal?
Drupal is an incredibly powerful Content Management System (CMS) built on the PHP coding language. Being open source it is free to download and use.
What is Drupal used for?
Drupal provides a framework that allows for non-technical users to manage large amounts of content on a website via a user interface. There are thousands of plugins in the Drupal ecosystem that can extend its capabilities to manage things such as events, e-commerce, complex forms to image galleries. It is commonly used by medium to large enterprises who require advanced features like content authoring workflows and configurable user permissions.
Is Drupal Easy to learn?
Drupal is not as easy to learn as compare to a system such as WordPress. This can be attributed to the incredibly powerful features that it offers particularly for medium to large organisations. It is possible within Drupal to limit what certain user groups can access when administering the site. When this is setup correctly to only show the key tasks for each user type the system can be quite easy to learn and administer.
How popular is Drupal?
As of February 22 2020, Drupal currently powers 1,096,313 websites worldwide. In comparison WordPress powers over 26 million websites worldwide.
Does Drupal require coding?
The short answer is it depends. You could download a Drupal theme and install and make all changes via the user interface. In most instances some coding will be required. For complex websites that need custom functionality, coding would be required.
What is a Drupal Theme?
A Drupal theme is a collection of files that define how all aspect of your website will look to the users of your website. A theme is typically made up of CSS(Stylesheet), Javascript files, custom font files and template files that dictate the structure of each webpage on the website.

What is a Drupal block?
A Drupal block can be thought of as a reusable snippet that can be shown on one or many pages. Blocks can be anything from a menu to a latest news snippets or an image gallery.
What is a Drupal content type?
A Drupal content type is a predefined set of fields for a particular type of content. For example an event may have start and end date field, and a publication may have a file upload field. Content types make it easier to manage content as each field is manageable instead of just one large WYSIWYG editor.
